Why is it important?
With 173 references covering self-healing material research over the past fifteen years, this is an extensive and up-to-date review article which we believe will be particularly useful to new researchers in the area.
Perspectives
Research in self-healing materials is relatively young. Much more can be done to create materials that are as good as their biological counterparts at repairing themselves. We have chosen an open-access platform for this article to make it widely available to the research community and encourage work in this new field.
