What is it about?
The paper “Adult attachment style and beliefs about public affairs and scientific issues” looks at a concept called adult attachment style in connection with political party and political beliefs in the United States. Attachments may be secure or insecure. The research problem stems from findings that partisans on opposite sides of contested issues frequently define the issues in terms so different that coming to an agreement is difficult. Often there is a conflict between people who rely on scientific evidence and people who draw on religious convictions.

Why is it important?
Secure attachments promote intellectual development in children and may do so in adults. On the whole, I found that insecure attachment styles were related to conservative, or Republican, beliefs in about half the comparisons of different topics.
Perspectives
Security of adult attachment style has an impact on people’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors in a number of different areas. I wondered if attachment style guided what people think is true about many political issues after I became interested in Douglas Hindman’s “belief gap hypothesis,” which has stimulated much research.
