Why is it important?
In this paper, our results are different than the common conception of leaders of small nonprofits: government grants and contracts can actually harm the organization and should be approached with caution.
Perspectives
This is a second article, co-authored with Erwin de Leon, that uses the Urban Institute's National Survey of Human Service Contractors (2010). I think that the findings are particularly relevant for our current government-nonprofit relationship where there are surely to be further cuts in human services and increasing limits included in contracts and grants.
