What is it about?

Many authors interpret complementary currencies just as monetary innovations. This, however, is just part of the story. Money, in conjunction with other elements like new technologies, creates economic relations. But who is supposed to be connected with whom? And, taking into account that they may be local and/or business oriented systems e.g., who stays outside? What are the informal boundaries of complementary currencies?
