What is it about?
Interviews with 16 data journalists working in Arab nations revealed that the practice of data journalism faces four barriers. One is widely known: authoritarian governments are reluctant if not opposed to allowing individuals to see data. Less known are three limits that journalists place on themselves. One is to abide by social customs that encourage acquiescence and discourage dissent. A second is to overcome ignorance in an area where training is infrequent. The third is resistance to new forms and a preference for tried-and-true methods.

Why is it important?
Data journalism has the potential to emancipate journalism from official strictures. But its potential will be unrealized if journalists themselves are reluctant to rock the boat.
