What is it about?

Germanium and core/shell nanowires are important for optical and electronic applications. We synthesized them in a single-step bottom-up process, where Ge and InTe shell self-organize in a core/structure. The nanowires are also free standing and oriented on single crystalline Si substrates.

Why is it important?

Core-shell nanowires are often made by a two-step process (first core growth, then shell growth). A single-step/self-organized process can be easier and more efficient. By this process, we are able to make nanowires with very small diameters (core down to about 15 nm, shell about 10 nm thick).

Perspectives

Optical, electrical and thermal transport properties of these objects could show interesting features.
