What is it about?
Agrotowns were designed to combine food production with the industrial and cultural facilities of a city. Early examples from the Soviet Union provide evidence that if these large towns are correctly planned, they can play an important role in the implementation of agro-ecology and other sustainable development planning goals.

Why is it important?
There is revived interest in agrotowns as a part of ongoing work in agro-ecology and sustainable development. The continuation of this research may be important given that agriculture is humanity’s most basic activity, and yet there has been a lengthy and ultimately destructive history of separating the population involved in agriculture from the rest of the population.
Perspectives
Agriculture lies at the beginning and the heart of civilization for better and for worse. Knocking down the barriers between manual and intellectual labor, as well as town and country, may give us the tools necessary to build a cooperative economy and an ecological civilization.
