Why is it important?

The family medicine specialty is relatively new in the west African sub-region; many universities in Nigeria are yet to commence undergraduate exposure of medical students to the discipline despite its relevance in building strong primary and secondary health care base in many developed nations. It was necessary to assess if a target group (medical students) was aware of the discipline and their perception of its relevance in undergraduate programs and health care systems.

Perspectives

There was a high awareness of the disciple among participants and was the second most preferred specialty. They also felt that the disciple was relevant in the health care delivery system.
