What is it about?

This is a review of many aspects around the issues of product development and deployment in service, with a main focus on the management and ultilisation of product data. This is essential to ensure product quality and cost-effective design.

Why is it important?

Having an appropriate data system ensures efficiency, so that as the product passes through different stages in development and life, and through the hands of different engineering professionals, all the relevant and necessary information is readily accessible.

Perspectives

A particular perspective for this paper was the through-life management of composite components. This is a particularly interesting challenge, because of the complexity of design and test of composites. Composites are materials produced by combining multiple materials in particular ways - so in addition to the produce geometry, there is a need to store a lot more detailed information concerning the product's construction. Similarly, for composites, the modes of failure are more complex, meaning that test data management, and through-life degridation assessment data are particularly complex and challenging to manage.
