What is it about?
A common cause of coma in children from Nepal is AES - acute encephalitis syndrome. At the moment the Glasgow coma scale is used to assess how poorly these children are, and to predict how they will do. Other scales also exist and so this study set out to establish how well each scale predicts a child's outcome.

Why is it important?
This is the first study to compare multiple coma scales in children from Nepal who have acute encephalitis syndrome.
Perspectives
This is a great starting point for future research! Our results suggest that there is fair to moderate agreement between the scales. We now need to run further larger studies to fully examine the relationship between coma scales and outcome.
