What is it about?
We show a way of testing the impact of programmes designed to encourage people to be more physically active, focusing particularly on groups who are know to be less likely to participate in mainstream sports including girls, ethnic minorities, people in deprived communities and people with disabilities.

Why is it important?
There hasn't been much testing of ways to encourage participation in sports. Our approach provides a way to work out how programmes that try to do this actually work so that sport bodies and governments can improve the ways in which they try to persuade more people to get involved.
Perspectives
I hope this article provides a way for people to understand better the effects of policies to encourage people to be more active which has a range of health and psychological benefits.
