The article demonstrates Chinese martial arts stars are able to resolve ideological contradictions between China’s past and present. This is due their status as modern celebrities who gain their fame from expertise in a traditional cultural practice.

Perspectives

It is my hope that this article will contribute in some small way to understanding the social significance of martial arts culture in modern China and how the rise of modern Chinese celebrity may impact on this.
