What is it about?

Panhandling, homelessness, and related social issues are commonly encountered by tourists when visiting a major metropolitan area. The question that this study attempts to answer is whether or not these factors impact visitors' perceptions of their personal safety or the destination's overall image.

Why is it important?

Hoteliers, destination marketing organizations, local politicians and others need to know if, by failing to appropriately address these issues, tourism will be negatively impacted, which will have negative economic consequences for the community.

Perspectives

While tourists may be offended by some of the behaviors of society's least fortunate citizens, many tourists anticipate encountering panhandling, homelessness, and other social problems. In addition, the prevalence of these behaviors do not supersede the positive attributes of a world-class destination.
