The South China Sea dispute is one of the most important disputes of our time.

Perspectives

As a 'test' of Chinese Foreign Ministry statements concerning prior Western and Japanese government statements concerning the islands in the South China Sea, it shows that the PRC claim was correct, and therefore partly answers the question concerning why the dispute exists.
