What is it about?

We have proposed a set of user interface (UI) controls for fine-grained management of location privacy settings based on Westin's privacy theory, privacy by design principles and general UI design principles. Tests with 23 participants in a lab-based study have shown that the UI controls were usable and well received, and that participants were keen on using it in real life.

Why is it important?

The article has two key innovations: propose and implement a process to design UI controls for location privacy.

Perspectives

People interested in advancing communication of location privacy settings might find useful ideas in the article. The model for location privacy design still need much work and testing to be empirically validated but is a useful start in an area where much research is still needed to put users in effective control of their location information (without burdening them with technicalities of location privacy management).
