What is it about?

An assessment of how the Ghanaian media report on children's issues

Featured Image

Why is it important?

Children are vulnerable and the media could be one of the institutions which can help highlight their plight and alleviate their worsening economic and social conditions, especially in developing countries

Perspectives

In developing countries where the media's attention is usually centred on political stories, as this research has shown, the alarming level of maltreatment of children and neglect by societies would never stop if children's issues continue to be neglected by the media. The findings of this research must awaken the media to realise that neglected children (in terms of education, health and shelter) of today are the likely criminals who would terrorise the society tomorrow. Children's plight and well-being must therefore be part of the media's agenda-setting role.
