What is it about?

A growing problem in elite sport is the large number of young athletes with undiagnosed (and therefore, untreated) asthma. This paper calls for better provision of respiratory care in youth, elite sport, with targeted screening programs (based on objective lung function assessments) and better management of the condition.

Why is it important?

Asthma is widespread in elite sport with, in some disciplines (such as swimming and football), 20 to 50% of young, competitive athletes suffering from the condition. Asthma has potential to compromise, not only the performance of the athletes, but also their respiratory health.

Perspectives

Much of the work on asthma in (elite) sport has so far focused on adult athletes. Yet, respiratory problems can often arise early on in a sporting career. Hence the need to raise awareness, and to implement appropriate detection and asthma management strategies in youth sport.
