What is it about?
In the spirit of furthering research that could potentially benefit service users with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, I responded to the letter from Crawford, Waller and Killaspy about my paper: ‘In the wake of Matisse: What about art therapy and psychosis?’ (2013). My letter simply reiterates some of the main points included in my paper, though possibly my letter is milder in tone than was my paper.

Why is it important?
I do not think that the research undertaken for Matisse RCT fully considered the impact of the service user movement and this is one of my main criticisms of that trial.
Perspectives
My perspective is that the impact of the service user movement for people with a diagnosis of psychosis is revolutionary. I hope that the theory and practice of art therapy will increasingly acknowledge the many ways in which movements like the International Hearing Voices Network helps us all become the subjects and not the objects of our histories.
