What is it about?

Everyone needs an immune system to protect yourself against infections. Especially on the mucosal surfaces of the lungs and the intestines you need to be protected. The class of antibodies especially suited for that is called IgA. Patients who lack IgA (IgA deficient) are susceptible to respiratory and intestinal infections. The cause of igA deficiency is not known yet and treatment therefore is treatment of sumptoms.

Why is it important?

This review discusses the current state of knowledge about IgA deficiency and speculates about potential causes.

Perspectives

IgA deficiency is the most common form of immunodeficiency and affects up to 1:700 people. Not all people with this deficiency have symptoms. Therefore it is a challenge for medical immunologists (like me) to find the cause of this disease
