What is it about?

In this study we investigated whether the ECR-R-RC scale, which is designed to assess attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance for children, has good psychometric properties in a sample of Italian children. We found that the scale measures Attachment Anxiety, and Attachment Avoidance in an acceptable manner, but we also found that, in that sample, Attachment Security is measured as well. This is an important new finding, which should be taken into account in studies taping on perceptions of attachment, especially when cross-country comparisons are made.

Why is it important?

This study is important for two reasons. First, it shows that the ECR-R-RC can be used as a self-report instrument to assess attachment in children, in Italian samples. Second, it shows that a three-factor structure (measuring Attachment Anxiety, Attachment Avoidance, and Attachment Security) better fits this scale in an Italian sample.
