What is it about?

Our paper reports both ports and harbors that were instrumental in the development of Indian Ocean Maritime trade during the early second millennium AD particularly in SE Tanzania. The research data indicates that despite their variations in sizes, ports and harbors give good information in understanding sailing practice, boat technology as well as resource needs.

Why is it important?

The paper is important as it gives details on why some coastal city states became highly successful in maritime trade and others did not. Among other reasons, the nature of ports and harbors gave additional advantage for whatever success was reached.
