What is it about?

This article describes the process of our project. Trained interviewers met with older people, and we evaluated the process at key points in a range of ways to ensure rigour, and to demonstrate a high quality process. Validity is an idea that is most often used in relation to numbers-based research.

Why is it important?

This innovative approach to creating a valid and reliable spiritual assessment for older people in Australia means that we are not reducing people to 'tick boxes' or giving their spirituality a 'score' but instead are providing a way for services to engage with each person in their humanity.

Perspectives

This project is especially important for Meaningful Ageing Australia for several reasons. One is our commitment to evidence-based and evidence-informed work; another is that the National Guidelines for Spiritual Care in Aged Care calls for a valid and reliable assessment; the third is that the Australian Aged Care Quality Standards expect assessments to occur. Finally, it is also positioned so that staff in a range of roles can be trained to conduct the assessment, which increases the number of older people who will actually get the chance to have this conversation, compared with keeping it to the domain of spiritual care specialists.
