What is it about?

• Nine flame retardants were measured in air, on hands, and in urine for workers performing spray polyurethane foam. • The spray foam is heated and sprayed at high pressure. There were originally questions about the state of the exposure, aerosol or vapor. The results of this study made it clear that workers exposure during application is to an aerosol.

Why is it important?

• Spray polyurethane foam workers wear respirators, coveralls, and gloves to protect themselves from isocyanates. TCPP is another exposure that workers are being exposed to and was found in their urine at levels two orders of magnitude above the general population. • Some spray polyurethane foam companies did not choose the most protective respirators for their workers, and some workers wore no respirators during application.

Perspectives

• High air and hand wipe TCPP concentrations were correlated with high urinary concentrations of BCPP. • The study concluded that air and hand samples were correlated with urinary metabolite but that helpers were more likely to be exposed dermally.
