What is it about?

Oil palm kernel shell was used to produce syngas by gasification process in a medium-scale gasifier. The results show that the syngas production efficiency is moderately high (around 50%) and high energy content (around 4.5 MJ/Nm3). With a maximum gasification feed rate of 500kg/hr, it was estimated that 600 kWe of power could be generated.

Why is it important?

The use of oil palm waste to produce cleaner fuel to produce power is good for the environment and energy security.

Perspectives

Gasification of palm kernel shell study has been carried out by many researchers, but this paper focused on an actual medium-scaled gasifier and demonstrated that this type of cleaner power generation is very much possible especially in a distributed power network concept.
