ESL teachers can increase their self-directed impact on their professional context through self-initiated customization, alteration, and/or expansion of their responsibilities as a teacher.

Why is it important?

Teacher agency is a crucial phenomenon to explore and understand in an era of de-skilling and de-professionalization of teachers through practices such as standardized testing and scripted curricula. Job Crafting can help us understand how teachers can make a professional impact even in the face of restrictive policies and/or limited resources. ESL teachers in particular are likely to be constrained in this way.

Perspectives

Emerging from the field of Management Studies, the concept of Job Crafting has great potential in education research. It can be used to understanding the day-to-day choices (agency) and career arcs (professional identity) of teachers. There is more work to be done in this direction.
