What is it about?

There is much accent diversity in the United Kingdom, with some accents perceived more favourably than others. This paper explores the implications for certain accents - here, Lancashire, West Midlands and London - in the teaching profession.

Why is it important?

This is important as my research fills a gap - namely, the implications for accent diversity and equality in the British teaching profession. We celebrate diversity and champion equality in society, yet we have little information on this from a linguistic-based perspective, especially accent. Given that language is a proxy for categories such as race and class, then more work is needed.


Accent is an accessible subject for everyone, not just linguists, so I think the paper will be an easy read. It essentially addresses the question, 'are all accents created equal in British teaching?'
