What is it about?

This study explores how parenting practices, such as communication, involvement in schoolwork, and expectations, are passed from one generation to the next in Latinx families in the U.S. It also examines how these practices influence children’s educational achievements and how acculturation affects these intergenerational patterns. The findings highlight the role of subtle, culturally grounded parental behaviors in shaping academic success.

Why is it important?

Parental involvement is crucial for children’s academic success, but mainstream ideas often overlook culturally specific practices in Latinx families. This study provides insight into these subtle practices and their positive impact on education. By understanding these dynamics, educators and policymakers can better support Latinx families and address disparities in educational outcomes. This research underscores the power of culturally rooted parenting practices in fostering educational success across generations. By identifying the importance of communication and expectations within Latinx families, this work aims to inspire educators to recognize and support these strengths rather than impose one-size-fits-all standards.
