What is it about?

Deliberate self-harm is increasingly being common, especially among youth. One of the strong predictors of deliberate self-harm is history of trauma. But our research showed that self-harm is also related to different patterns of dissociative phenomena (e.g. dissociative identity disorder and depersonalization/derealization disorder). This study clarifies the relationship between trauma, dissociative disorders and deliberate self-harm.

Why is it important?

I this study, the prevalence of deliberate self-harm has been investigated among Iranian young adults. The relationships of deliberate self-harm to trauma and dissociation has been clarified. Also, potential mechanisms involved in endorsing self-harm have been discussed.

Perspectives

Preventive measures should be taken into account with regard to children's being exposed to trauma and any form of abuse. Also, the vulnerability of teenagers to endorse self-harm should be focused.
