What is it about?

We examine the energy efficiency and energy productivity changes of ECOWAS members using nonparametric non-radial efficiency and dynamic productivity assessment techniques that take into consideration undesirable outputs. Increasingly, energy efficiency, has been seen as a potent and cost-effective way of offsetting the rising costs, uncertain supply and growing demand for energy services and thereby meeting the demands for sustainable development.

Why is it important?

We examine efficiency at both the generation and distribution sectors of the industry with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions in the conversion of primary energies and minimizing distribution losses in the supply of electricity in the region. This provides opportunity for better state-level policy focus since the ECOWAS policy identifies both CO2 emissions and distribution losses as undesirable outputs.
