What is it about?

This study developed a tool to help adults with hearing loss make informed decisions about their hearing care. The tool was built based on feedback from a survey and user testing sessions, where participants shared their thoughts on the information included, ease of use, and layout. The final prototype includes sections on learning about hearing loss, considering personal preferences, exploring treatment options, and making decisions. The aim is to create a useful resource for people with hearing loss and their families to understand and choose the best options for their hearing care.

Why is it important?

This study helps adults with hearing loss make quicker and more informed decisions about seeking help, reducing the time they typically wait before addressing their hearing difficulties. It is well known that adults with acquired hearing loss often delay seeking treatment, sometimes for years. A recent study found an average delay of 8.9 years between first noticing hearing issues and seeking help. Untreated hearing loss can negatively impact quality of life, causing problems such as loneliness, social isolation, and depression—not just for individuals with hearing loss, but also for their families. By providing an online decision aid, this tool can encourage timely help-seeking and potentially reduce these negative outcomes, improving the overall well-being of those with hearing loss.
