Multilingualism and language switching enhance awareness in a foreign language

What is it about?

Are multilinguals better communicators when they use a foreign language learned in school? This study revealed that the more proficient they are in their languages. multilinguals are more tuned to noticing how politeness is expressed and when sentences are impolite in a language they learned as a foreign language at school. Frequently switching between one´s languages enhanced this ability in our participants. Importantly, using one´s foreign language often and in many contexts (reading, writing a journal, watching movies, etc.) is the best way to ensure awareness of grammatical correctness and politeness.
