What is it about?

Solar rooftop Photovoltaic systems are an emerging technology and have various advantages among other large utility-scale power plants. In the present study, four rooftop solar photovoltaic systems of different capacity have been selected to evaluate the energy, economic and environmental performance. Performance ratio (PR), energy density, energy payback time (EPBT) and energy return on energy invested (EROI) of the systems have been determined under energy performance. It has been observed that the PR of rooftop PV systems lies from 75.70 to 84.81% and EPBT ranges from 5.31 to 6.14 years. The minimum cost of electricity of rooftop PV system calculated 2.88 INR/kWh at the 5% interest rate considering the 30-year of lifespan.

Why is it important?

The results will help the system installers, designers and developers to predict the actual energy, economic and environmental benefits. The study will also help to achieve the limit of 40% solar rooftop installation out of 100 GW by encouraging the investors and end-users to install the rooftop PV system.

Perspectives

The study will help the readers to understand the advantages of solar rooftop PV systems in term of the energy, economic and environmental performance and it would be applicable to the development of the new rooftop PV systems. The application of the outcomes of the present study will support to achieve the goal under “Grid Connected Rooftop and Small Solar Power Plants Program” and the aim of sustainable development.
