What is it about?

The tropical plants become an important source of molecules in this scenario. We have reported the trypanocidal effect of a compound isolated from a plant collected in Paraguay, Helietta apicultata Benth.. The results presented indicated that this molecule exhibited trypanocidal activity in vivo in the mouse model of acute infection similar to the benznidazole when it was administered by oral route.

Why is it important?

In the present study, we wish to disclose a new approach to develop a treatment of Chagas disease from Helietta apiculata, demonstrating that an extract prepared from the bark of H. apiculata holded an activity comparable with the reference drug, benznidazole.

Perspectives

This study could be welcomed by scientific and rural communities of South America because it could help them towards the use of local resources to threat an endemic infection, Chagas disease, affecting 20% of the population of this country
