What is it about?

By drawing on examples from contemporary children’s media, this article critically discusses conviviality, a concept increasingly used to denote unproblematic encounters with diversity.

Why is it important?

Our finding shows that diversity tends to be depicted and constructed as "nice" and "harmless" in media for children. We suggest that the concept of "comfortable conviviality" is helpful for discussing the phenomena further.

Perspectives

I am proud of this article, co-written with the brilliant Avanti Chajed. It bridges communication and pedagogy by approaching children's media as a societal curriculum. It also offers new insights into how media participates in constructing non-threatening difference.
