Why is it important?

To evaluate the ultrasonographic features and pregnancy outcomes in women with ductus venosus-systemic shunt and systematic review of the literature

Perspectives

first trimester fetal examination is a standard care of pregnancy and measurement of ductus venosus flow is a routine part of first trimester fetal examination, we aimed to emphasize that usefulness of fetal ductus venosus flow assessment can be beyond screening for chromosomal abnormalities and fetal heart disease in the first trimester. Diagnosis of ductus venosus-systemic shunt can be easily made in the first trimester. In case of ductus venosus-systemic shunt, detailed fetal examination should be performed and genetic counseling should be made. Prognosis is good if the pathology is isolated. Further studies are needed to determine the relationship between ductus venosus-systemic shunt and trisomy 21.
