What is it about?

Partial shots are submaximal approach shots used when you are between club distances. In this paper, we explore the motion changes that golfers employ to reduce shot distance. We have shown that golfers who perform shots to 80% of their full carry distance favor a reduction in lower body over upper body motion.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that partial shot technique should be actively practiced as it is significantly different from a scaled full shot. Coaching cues should focus on reducing lower body motion whilst aiming for similar of slightly less upper body motion. Future research should aim to fully explore the movement in 3D and optimising swing motion to improve accuracy.

Perspectives

Hopefully, this article can help amateur golfers improve skills that will help them stay in golf for longer.
