What is it about?

This article discusses media coverage of, and responses of politicians and LGBT activists to, utterances of Pope Benedict XVI about homosexuality--or, more precisely, utterances that they perceived as being directed against gay and lesbian persons.

Why is it important?

Several scholars have already analysed the way Popes and other Roman Catholic clergy or Vatican representatives have addressed issues of homosexuality, gender and (same-sex) marriage, but little attention has been paid to the reception of this in western liberal societies.

Perspectives

I wanted to nuance the general image of the Pope/Vatican as being simply "anti-gay" or the simplified "religion versus secularism" dichotomy, not because I want to "defend" the Pope/Vatican, but because I want to show what is at stake for different contributors to public discourse and what this teaches us about the role of religion in western liberal society and about the role of attitudes towards homosexuality or sexual diversity in that respect.
