What is it about?
In the early 1960s, France lost all of its imperial holdings in Africa--but Portugal still held onto its colonial territory. While the Franco-Portuguese relationship in that time did partly revolve around the Cold War alliance, my research shows that ideas about race, empire, and civilization were also an important part of French support for the Portuguese in Africa.

Why is it important?
It's easy to think about the Cold War era as being overwhelmed by superpower ideological conflict, but we also need to pay close attention to ideas of race and power.
