What is it about?
The article analyses Revert Henrique Klumb's photographs of urban and natural landscapes in and around Rio de Janeiro during the 1850s and 1860s. The article suggests that Klumb's photographs advanced a developmental agenda and spoke to the modernization of the city at this time.

Why is it important?
Comparatively little has been written on Klumb in Portuguese and even less in English. Yet, he is one of the most significant photographers working in Brazil and especially in Rio in the middle of the nineteenth century. Klumb's photographs tell us something about what Rio was like at this time. I always say that my research is really about bringing the work of culturally significant, but under-studied, photographers to a wider English-speaking audience. This article continues that work.
Perspectives
I find that photographs more than anything else really bring the past alive. I really connected with Klumb's photographs when I first saw them. That, for me, is an important factor in choosing what to write about. It helped that Klumb seemed to be an interesting figure, about whom there seemed to be a degree of mystery (for example, relating to his nationality).
