What is it about?

The basic ability of the bitumen is to hold together the mineral aggregates in the asphalt concrete. This ability is known as a "cohesion". The cohesion value can give an information to predict the strength of the asphalt concrete. For a specific binders with polymers or warm mix additives the cohesion index can be more useful than a conventional indexes of the bitumen quality. In this research the simple test methodology is shown, the basic principles and test parameters are described, that can be useful for researchers.

Why is it important?

The conventional bitumen indexes, such as penetration or a softening point temperature, are good to predict the asphalt concrete quality. With a modified bitumen these indexes turn to unreliable. This problem requires an expensive test equipment to find more complex and fundamental binder characteristics. The cohesion test can be provided with a simple test equipment, and the test results are reliable enough to predict the parameters of the asphalt concrete.

Perspectives

The shown method of the cohesion test is simple in a spacement preparation and test equipement. Moreover the evaluation of the shear resistance in bitumen film of 0.2 mm is quickly. So it can be used as an alternative to more complex tests. The reliability of obtained data is confirmed by more than 30 years practise of research.
