What is it about?

This article offers a comparative analysis of the role played by peace and conflict resolution organisations in Northern Ireland and Turkey in negotiating solutions to ethno-nationalist conflicts in these countries. It argues that P/CROs have been instrumental in deescalating violence and encouraging conflicting parties to resolve conflict peacefully.

Why is it important?

This paper finds that P/CROs provided help shaping and promoting non-violent processes of conflict resolution. The peace groups related to the focus of the research in Northern Ireland have only been analysed by a few sources. Similarly, there are but a handful of pieces of research related to peace organisations in Turkey.8 None of this research underlines the importance of the role of peace groups as conflict resolution organisations.

Perspectives

This research has sought to explore the influence of P/CROs in peacemaking efforts led by political agents. It has revealed that to understand conflict resolution processes from early peace efforts to a political settlement, it is not sufficient to assess the role of political parties and actors alone.
