What is it about?

Glaucoma can affect various aspects of vision including the peripheral vision. We found that a significant proportion of people who are seen in hospital after falling also have glaucoma. It could be that glaucoma can affect the vision in some patients making them more susceptible to tripping over and falling.

There is a huge cost burden to the health service from injuries sustained after falling.

Perspectives

It is important to address treatable causes of poor vision early on in order to prevent vision loss that affects peoples' safety. This is an important point to consider especially since so much time and expense is required to look after people injured after falls.
