What is it about?

Citizen journalism is supposed to be a space for amateurs, free from the rules of mainstream media. As it turns out, there are a lot of professional journalists working on citizen journalism web sites. We study what kind of citizen journalism site work at and whether those sites produce different types of content.

Why is it important?

This study uses the most representative sample of citizen journalism sites to date. It also challenges the assumption that citizen journalists are amateurs who are breaking free of the rules of professional journalism.
