What is it about?
In this article, we look at the profile of online participants in Germany. We distinguish three forms of online participation: political, social & entertainment, and skilled participation. We then test with an online survey data from 1488 people in Germany the effect of age, gender, education as well as privacy concerns and self-efficacy on each of the three forms. Self-efficacy is the strongest predictor for all three forms and age is also important (younger users are more likely to be engaging in skilled and social & entertainment participation but not in political participation). Education has a positive effect on political participation but a negative one on social & entertainment participation.
