What is it about?

We describe the use of the Kinect, Leap Motion, and MYO armband in combination with voice control as natural user interfaces (NUIs) during laparoscopic surgery (partial nephrectomy and hepatectomy). After surgery, surgeons completed a questionnaire about their experience.

Why is it important?

The presented interfaces are feasible to directly interact in a more intuitive and sterile manner with the preoperative images and the integrated operating room (OR) functionalities during laparoscopic surgery. More personalized medical image viewers and higher integration with the capabilities of the presented gesture control system should be included in future developments.

Perspectives

Surgical environments require special aseptic conditions for direct interaction with the preoperative images. In conclusion, the presented gesture control system allowed surgeons to directly interact in a sterile manner with preoperative patient information, and control the functionalities of an integrated OR during surgery.
