What is it about?
Highlighting that the Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes - explicitly in four paragraphs and implicitly in two paragraphs that spiritual development is crucial for childrens' maturing, awareness and responsibilites - and that the Committee on the Rights of the Child has made important clarifications on children's spiritual development, and should guide states, by adopting a General Comment.

Why is it important?
How can a general comment by the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on the right to spiritual development assist states in their policies and programmes? First, current understandings of spiritual well-being encompass all relevant dimensions of meaning-making, enhanced awareness and connectedness. Second, the CRC has elaborated on spiritual development in 16 of its 21 general comments, providing good advice. Third, the understanding of the term spiritual is diverse among states. Fourth, a general comment will inspire and guide relevant policies and programmes at domestic level
Perspectives
The term spiritual encompasses one's relationship to self, others, nature (world) and the transcendent (God - or dimensions of humanity (creativity, conscience, altruism) for non-religious persons).
