What is it about?

Students in therapy trainings are expected to engage with self-development opportunities. It is not clear the extent to which personal psychotherapy for which indivdiaul students pay is helpful. This paper discusses the pros and cons of mandatory self-development in therapy training.

Why is it important?

Mandatory psychotherapy for which the trainee therapy student pays is a long held requirement in many trainings. It is important that assumptions about the value of this self-development opportunity be elucidated. Courses must be able to explain the reason for this requirement to students. This article helps outline what is needed to make the requirement clearer and to fit better with current university requirements in terms of learning outcomes and advice to students.
