What is it about?
this book review gives a synopsis and a critical appreciation of Jean Pierre Le Foll-Luciani's hugely detailed historical account of multiple dissident trajectories. In particular it attempts to tease out some of Le Foll-Luciani's broader arguments about Algerian Jewish identification.

Why is it important?
The monograph is a piece of work that is not available in English. The book review that appeared in the Journal of North African Studies is the first précis of this important historical document in English. It should appeal to scholars and a wider public interested in History, North Africa, Colonialism, Jewish Studies and Left Wing politics.
Perspectives
Le Foll-Luciani's work is particularly important because it gives a counter-narrative to the generally held view that Jews in Algeria accepted the colonial system because they were given rights and privileges (notably French citizenship) in spite of the fact that these were revoked under Vichy during the Second World War. It shows the disproportionate amount of Jews who actively opposed the colonial regime some of whom took up arms alongside the FLN.
