Presenting the conflict as a ‘people's war’ was the dominant theme of films made in Britain during the Second World War, implying equality of involvement and sacrifice.The limitations of this model is apparent, however, in the case of films portraying the Merchant Navy. Non-white merchant mariners are not seen on-screen.Even in films made after the end of hostilities, when non-white seafarers do appear they remain as outsiders,associated with anxieties about British society.
