Why is it important?
Our findings suggest that if concomitantly considering the confounding effect of occurring anxiety symptoms, long sleep duration and daytime sleepiness are the most robust correlates for depression in the older adults.
Perspectives
This study derided from the umbrella project, the Yilan Study in Taiwan. The Yilan Study aims to implement comprehensive screen, evaluation and intervention of health promotion program in community-dwelling older adults. As per these findings, it suggests that in addition to well-known 'insomnia' and 'hypnotics use', daytime sleepiness and long sleep duration may be more sensitive indicators for depression in older adults.
